    Hello colleagues,

    is there any possibility in WSS to have a column which automatically assigns a number to each newly created item? Something like ID, but "more visible and usable"...or, if possible, not only 1,2,3, but something like "year-XX" etc.

    If you create a list from the Issue template, you will have an ID number that is an auto-number. Bur you can also had a calculated column to an existing List, and set a formula with the ID field (hidden) and a text or another field (i.e. Title).

    Hello Ricardo,

    I was a bit disappointed today...I tried to create this auto-number field with Concatenate([ID];"-";Year([Created])).

    The formula works, but there is one problem: if I create a NEW item, the formula's results are faster than the ID assignment, so the result of =ID is always ZERO. If I add a column to an existing list, the result is OK as expected - unless I add a new item.

    How to get around this?

    Yes. I haven't recognized any differences between Issues and other list types in this case.

    Funny you should ask. I just recently did this exact thing for a client. I created an itemadded event handler that added 1000 to the ID field and placed in in a new column called project ID. I also applied the same calculation to the itemupdated event, in order to keep it from being changed by any user.
