workflow only works when I'm the user; not for other users

I'm new to SharePoint.  I installed the Absence/Leave Request template and have modified the workflow a bit using SharePoint Designer.  For step one of the workflow, I've got it set so that if the initiation field Director Approve/Reject is marked Approved by the right user (me, for testing purposes), then the list field Status is updated from Pending Director Approval to Pending HR Approval.  This is working beautifully, but only if I'm the user who created the request.  If I log in as another user to create a test request, then log back in as myself and try to give it Director approval, the Status field is not updated.  I've got the list settings set so that all users can edit all items, but it's still not working.  Any ideas?
