Add a site template to Central Administration so it's available when you create a new site collection

When you create a new site collection, Central Administration creates a top level site and offers you the standard set of templates for that top level site.

If you want to add a custom template to the list of templates offered by Central Administration, simply:

    • Create a custom template (.stp)
    • From the command prompt, use STSADM -O ADDTEMPLATE:
stsadm.exe -o addtemplate -filename filename -title "friendly name" -description "description"

Type stsadm -help addtemplate for details.

Then restart IIS by typing iisreset.

Re: Add a site template to Central Administration so it's available when you create a new site collection

I have created a custom template and deployed it on the central admin. It is being shown under the custom tab and I am able to create sites using it also. but when I sent the same template to be deployed on the production environment, it got deployed from the command prompt. Operation successful and iisreset done. But when trying to create a new site using the template, it is throwing an error saying ::  "The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found".

what could be the possible problem?

Re: Add a site template to Central Administration so it's available when you create a new site collection

    Hi Dan,

        I have problem with templates.

My problem is i have to create a site template which I'm successfully able to do but the site to which i must create a template also contains 8 subsites which are not getting included  in the template when restored to new site.

I'm using sharepoint 2003.My sharepoint site structre is Site A(GlobalInfo) which has many subsites(eg.. India, USA, Japan...) Each country pages have 8 subsites each.So i have to create a template for one country(including its subsites) and use that to create another country pages(including it subsites)

How can i solve this ..really got struck here and its very urgent I dont need to add this to central administration..

Please kindly help me in this regard .

    Thanks,

    Sudha
