    WSS v3 deployment scenario

My company is currently running a single WSS v2 server and have asked our vendor to supply us with a v3 migration strategy.  Our current server has approx 150 Top Level Site Collections, approx 340 sites and sub-sites, 25GB content database size, and roughly 1000 users.  Not all users access WSS daily, this is just the total that have acces to the server.  My vendors suggestion is to deploy two WSS v3 web front end servers (one for search/front end, and the other for front end only) in a server farm, along with a load balancer (none specified) sitting in front of them.  The SQL 2005 database server sits behind the two web front end servers.

I'm curious as to whether or not it is necessary to deploy BOTH the load balancer AND the dual server farm.  Isn't this somewhat of a redundant approach?  I thought a server farm would be basically the equivalent of a load balancer.  Also, given the basic information I have provided, is it necessary to deploy two front end web servers or would one suffice?
