I am attempting to put ESRI ArcGIS map documents into a SharePoint 3.0 document library. We have versioning turned on and require that files be checked out before they can be edited.
When we click on the file link it does indeed download and open ArcGIS. However, when we save the document it overwrites the previous copy without versioning. In fact this can all be done without even checking it out.
It seems that the only way to maintain different versions is to manually check out the file, work on it, save it and manually check it back in. Only then will multiple versions be kept.
I understand that ArcGIS does not have SharePoint 3.0 integration, but it seems that SharePoint shouldn't even allow the saving of files if they are not checked out. If it does it seems that it should automatically create new versions each time the file is saved. I don't understand why SharePoint freely allows versioned copies to be edited and saved without intervening.
Do I just need to change some settings in SharePoint? Am I using the document library incorrectly?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks!
